A driveway is a drainage project first
Water is the main reason rural drives rut, wash, and lose aggregate. A durable route considers crown or cross-slope, surrounding grades, low points, culverts, ditches, soil strength, traffic, and where runoff can safely go. Adding gravel without correcting water movement often buries the problem for a short time rather than fixing it.
New routes should avoid unnecessary steep grades, soft drainage corridors, sharp trailer turns, and valuable trees when alternatives exist. Walking the route before clearing can save substantial rework.
Subgrade and material selection
North Texas clay can be firm when dry and extremely weak when wet. Depending on use, the road may need undercutting, stabilization fabric, larger base stone, compacted road base, or staged construction. A residential car drive, loaded dump-truck route, fire access lane, and temporary construction entrance have different requirements.
Materials may include recycled or crushed concrete, flex base, crushed limestone, gravel, or select fill depending on availability and specification. Quantity is based on length, width, compacted depth, waste, and existing grade, not a single truckload guess.
Rough grading versus engineered grading
Rough grading improves general shape, access, and drainage direction. Engineered grading follows elevations, slopes, compaction, and drainage details prepared for a permitted development or structure. We clarify which level is included so a property owner does not mistake visual smoothness for tested structural preparation.
Final landscaping grades may also require topsoil, fine grading, erosion control, and seeding after heavy work is complete. Those restoration steps can be planned with the primary project.
Repairing existing lanes
Existing ranch roads often fail at isolated low points, outside turns, shaded wet stretches, clogged crossings, and edges narrowed by vegetation. Targeted clearing, drainage work, reshaping, and material placement may restore the route without rebuilding every foot.
A site visit helps separate surface maintenance from deeper base failure. Photos taken after rain are particularly useful because they show where water actually moves and stands.

What kind of gravel is best?
It depends on the subgrade, traffic, drainage, desired surface, and locally available material. Road base or crushed material often locks together better than rounded stone.
How much material do I need?
Volume is calculated from area and depth, then adjusted for compaction and waste. The existing grade and soft spots can significantly increase actual quantity.
Can you build over wet clay?
Sometimes stabilization or removal of unsuitable material is needed. Placing finish aggregate over saturated soil without preparation can lead to rapid failure.
Do you install culverts?
Crossings and drainage structures can be evaluated, but size, location, and permits may require civil or municipal direction.
Is the finished surface guaranteed not to wash?
No outdoor road is maintenance-free. Proper drainage and material selection greatly improve performance, but extreme weather and ongoing traffic still require upkeep.
